The album is the first of two posthumous greatest hits compilations released by Death Row Records and Amaru Entertainment, the second being The Best of 2Pac - Part 2: Life. The album features some of 2Pac's most popular songs, as well as one previously unreleased track, "Resist the Temptation". The album also includes a new remix of "Dear Mama" featuring Anthony Hamilton.
The album was a critical and commercial success. It debuted at number 63 on the Billboard 200 chart, and eventually sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States. It was certified platinum by the RIAA in 2008.
