Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the fifth studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on September 24, 1991, by Warner Bros. Records.
Produced by Rick Rubin, its musical style differed notably from the band's previous album Mother's Milk (1989), reducing the use of heavy metal guitar riffs and accentuating the melodic songwriting contributions of guitarist John Frusciante.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is widely recognized as an influential and seminal release of the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s, with Steve Huey of AllMusic calling it "probably the best album the Chili Peppers will ever make." Flea shared the same sentiment in 2023, calling it his favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers album. It is the band's second best-selling album behind Californication.
The album was a commercial success, reaching number three on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and topping the charts in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It has been certified 14× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), making it one of the best-selling albums of all time in the United States.
The album spawned several hit singles, including "Give It Away", "Under the Bridge", "Suck My Kiss", and "Breaking the Girl". It was nominated for six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and won the award for Best Rock Album.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is considered one of the greatest albums of all time by critics and fans alike. It is ranked number 51 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and number 6 on Pitchfork's list of the 200 Best Albums of the 1990s.
