Thelonious Monk - The Classic Quartet - 9401
Tracks
The Classic Quartet is an album by American jazz pianist Thelonious Monk and his working quartet, featuring Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone on two tracks, Milt Hinton on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. It was recorded in New York City on October 17, 18, and 22, 1957, and released in 1959 by Riverside Records.
The music on The Classic Quartet is characterized by Monk's unique and innovative style. His melodies are often angular and dissonant, and his rhythms are complex and unpredictable. Monk's playing is also highly improvisational, and he often challenges his bandmates to follow him into uncharted territory.
Monk's quartet with Rouse, Coltrane, Hinton, and Clarke is considered to be one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all time. The group's recordings from this period are some of Monk's most celebrated work.
