The album was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 and earning Scott his first platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The album's title is a reference to Scott's hometown of Missouri City, Texas, which he has described as a "trap" for many of his friends. The album explores themes of poverty, crime, and drug abuse, but also offers a message of hope and resilience.
Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight is considered one of the most influential albums of the trap genre. It helped to popularize the dark and experimental sound that has become synonymous with Scott's music. The album also featured some of the biggest names in hip hop at the time, which helped to cement Scott's status as a rising star.
